‘…and become once again that most limited of all specialists, the “well-rounded man.”‘
What is a “well-rounded man (or woman),” and why would you want to become one?
To me, a well-rounded individual is one that has a broad base of knowledge and, ideally, experience.
A well rounded person should be:
- Well read
- Well traveled
- Well educated, although not always in the traditional sense
- adept at dealing with others
Why would you want to become one? The more topics you can speak to intelligently, or at least listen to intelligently, the more people you can connect with.
It is extremely satisfying to learn about new topics, meet new people, and rise to new challenges.
New opportunities of all kinds are out there, and you are more likely to find them if you are on the move. These might be new jobs, new business opportunities, new people, or almost anything.
Why might you not want to become one? Being a jack of all trades, but master of none usually is not as profitable as being really good at something. The ideal is probably a specialty around your career, with the rest of your life and knowledge better rounded.
It is a lot of work. If you are like me, most of it is pretty fun, but it can be tempting to watch something mindless rather than read a book, or slack off on things that require real study, like things that need certifications, or learning a language.
It can be expensive. It doesn’t have to be, but it’s not hard to spend thousands of dollars in books, travel is expensive, and equipment for activities can run a lot of money.
About me:
I am an IT consultant, married, no children yet.
I realized a while ago that I have a few too many hobbies, and most of them tend to be kind of expensive. This lead to me saying that my most expensive hobby is collecting expensive hobbies.
Over the years, I have collected:
- Road and some mountain biking
- Photography
- Guitar
- Live sound and recording equipment, although this is mainly focused on church, so it’s not as expensive to me as it could be.
- Shooting
- Reading
- Scuba Diving
- Kayaking
- Coffee
- The list goes on…
I am not active on all of these, and I am certainly not an expert in most of them, but I figured these could form a good basis for a blog.
